Laker Softball Sweeps Muskegon, Jumps to Second Place in North

The Lakers came in at 4-6 in MCCAA Northern Conference play, looking to shoot up the standings when they hosted the Jayhawks of Muskegon Community College for a five game series. 

Game one the Lakers wasted no time getting on the board, getting off to a 4-0 start in the first inning thanks to two 2-run homeruns, one from Janelle Yarnell and one from Angelina Lanham. The Lakers and Jayhawks traded a couple of more runs throughout the game, resulting in a 6-2 victory for the Lakers. Yarnell's big weekend started by going 3-3 in the game game with the 2-run homerun and an RBI double. Maggie Wallace also turned in a multi-hit game as well. Lanham drove in the other 3 runs for the Lakers. Heidi Nagel pitched all 7.0 innings striking out 15 while only allowing 1 earned run.

Game two the ladies turned in a 10-hit game, resulting in a 9-4 win to wrap up day one of the series. Three Lady Lakers had multi-hit games: Haley Gibson, Maggie Wallace, and Ella Clauss. Grace Garrison, Mackenzie Hoogerhyde, Rylie Shafer, and Maggie Wallace all played a role in driving in runs. Shelby Bundy had a solid game on the mound, throwing 6.1 innings, allowing just 2 earned runs and striking out 7.

Game three was another dominant performance from the home Lakers, blanking the Jayhawks 8-0. Nagel threw all 5 innings in the mercy rule victory allowing 2 hits, no runs, and struck out 7. The Lakers scored 5 runs in the first two innings, and tacked on 3 more late to hit the mercy run rule. Yarnell had another 3-3 game, with a double and 2 runs driven in. Lanham also had a multi-hit game and batted in 4 runs.

Game four, Lanham and Bundy combined to throw all 5 innings in yet another 8-run mercy rule victory for the Lakers: 13-5. Ella Clauss, Mackenzie Hoogerhyde, and Mackenzie Lane each had a multi-hit game. Hoogerhyde drove in 4 runs, including a solo homerun in the fifth inning to push the mercy-run rule into effect. Grace Garrison and Ella Clauss each batted in 3 runs.

Looking for the series sweep, Heidi Nagel toed the rubber for the Lakers, and again she went the distance of the game. Nagel threw 6 innings allowing 2 earned runs while striking out 12 en route to a 10-2 Lakers win, finishing the series sweep. The Lakers offense was led by Yarnell again going 2-4 with a homerun and driving in 5 of the 10 Laker runs. Haley Gibson also hit a homerun in the game. Allie Young and Lanham drove in the other two Laker runs. 

The series sweep pulled the Lady Laker's conference record to 9-6 going into the weekend series versus Delta College, where they'll look to catapult themselves into first place in the MCCAA Northern Conference. The series begins 4/21 at Delta.
