Softball Splits First Four Games with Delta, Makeup Game Scheduled
The Lakers and Pioneers came into the weekend series as the top two teams in the MCCAA Northern Conference, fighting for the top spot. The Lakers hit the road at 9-6 in conference play, while the Pioneers came in at 8-4 in conference play.
Game one was the definition of a pitchers duel. The Lakers had 0 hits until the 7th inning. Janelle Yarnell singled and stole second base, she then was singled in by Maggie Wallace as the lone player to cross the plate in the contest. The Lakers took game one 1-0. Heidi Nagel was tremendous, throwing all 7 scoreless innings, striking out 7 along the way.
Game two was another Lakers victory, this time with a score of 8-2. Shelby Bundy turned in a good performance on the mound, throwing 6 innings allowing just 6 hits and 2 runs to score. Nagel came in to close the game out in the seventh inning. Angelina Lanham went 2-4 with a homerun and 2 RBI. Ella Clauss and Shelby Bundy each had a hit in the game as well. Mackenzie Hoogerhyde drove in 2 runs.
Game three, the Pioneers outlasted the Lakers, walking the game off in the bottom of the 10th inning, with a final score of 3-2. Nagel again was lights out on the mound, throwing 9.1 innings, allowing 3 earned runs while striking out 13 batters. The Lakers scattered 9 hits and could only muster up the 2 runs. Janelle Yarnell and Ella Clauss each had a multi-hit game. Yarnell also had a double. Hoogerhyde and Lanham each had an RBI in the game.
Game four was the offensive explosion that did not exist in the first three games of the series. Both teams had a hit parade, but it was the Pioneers coming out victorious with a 19-11 win to tie up the series at 2-2. The Lakers scored 11 runs on 8 hits including a grand slam off the bat of Shelby Bundy as a part of her 2-3 game in which she drove in 5 runs. Maggie Wallace also had a multi-hit game going 2-3 with a double. Ella Clauss, Mackenzie Hoogerhyde, Mackenzie Lane, and Rylie Shafer each drove in a run for the Lakers.
The fifth game was not played due to poor weather conditions, and has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 2nd. Before then, the Lakers will travel to Jackson College for a double header on Tuesday, 4/25 and a weekend series at Alpena CC on 4/28-4/30.
