Softball Splits Doubleheader at Saint Clair CC
Softball traveled to Marysville Park to take on the Saint Clair County Community College Skippers in their first doubleheader since they returned home from Florida. The Lakers came in with five wins on the season, looking to stack up some wins in the non-conference slate heading into the conference season.
The ladies jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a 2-run homerun off the bat of Alexis Mielke. The Skippers answered with a solo homerun in the second inning, pulling the game to a 2-1 score. From there, the Lakers took control of the game and would go on to win big. Mielke continued her big game with an RBI double in the third inning, and was subsequently singled in by Adria Reed to push the Laker lead to 4-1. Mielke then singled in a run in the fourth inning to make the score 6-1. In the fifth inning, Ella Clauss would single in a run, and then go on to score thanks to an Averi Hall groundout. The score would sit at 8-1 after five. In the sixth inning, Olyviah Hanson hit a grand slam to balloon the lead to 12-1. Zoey Bacon would hit a solo homerun to tack on one more run, and that would be the final run to cross the plate. The Lakers would win 13-1 in game one.
Averi Hall had a double and scored 2 runs. Janelle Yarnell went 1-2 at the plate, scoring 4 runs and walking twice. Alexis Mielke had a monster game at the dish, going 4-4 with a homerun, a double, 3 runs scored, and 5 runs driven in. Adria Reed went 2-4 with a run driven in. Grace Piggott went 2-3 with a double and a run scored. Olyviah Hanson went 2-4 at the dish with a grand slam homerun, resulting in 4 RBI. Zoey Bacon went 2-4 with a solo homerun.
The Skippers would strike first in game two, hitting 2-run homeruns in back to back innings, jumping out in front 4-0 after the first two innings. Janelle Yarnell hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning to cut into the lead 4-1. The Skippers would tack on one more run in the fourth inning, pushing the lead to 5-1. Zoey Bacon hit an RBI groundout, followed by a 2-run single off the bat of Alexis Mielke. The lead for the Skippers had been cut down to 5-4. The Skippers added a couple of runs in the fifth inning to push their lead to 7-4 with just two innings left to play. The Lady Lakers would not go away quietly. In the top of the sixth inning, Zoey Bacon singled to drive in Allie Hawkins, to trim the deficit to 7-5. Averi Hall stepped up to the plate, and delievered a 2-run homerun to left field, tying the game at 7-7. The Skippers answered with a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth, putting them back out in front 8-7. The Lakers threatened in the seventh, but could not score. The Skippers would win game two 8-7, and the series would be split.
Averi Hall went 2-3 with a 2-run homerun. Janelle Yarnell went 1-2 with a double and a run driven in. Alexis Mielke continued her big day with a 2-4 game at the plate, driving in 2 runs. Allie Hawkins went 1-3 with a run scored. Zoey Bacon went 1-2 with 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, and a walk drawn. Zoey Bacon threw 5 innings, while Alexis Mielke finished the game out for the Lakers.
The ladies will return to action on Tuesday 3/26 when they travel to play Alma College JV.
