Lady Lakers Knock off Chargers - Play for Trip to Nationals Sunday

Flint, MI - The Mid Michigan College Lakers women's basketball showed why they entered the postseason District B as the top seed on Friday night, taking control in the second quarter and rolling to a 73–59 victory over Marian University Ancilla in the NJCAA Region XII District B Tournament.

With the win, the Lakers advance to Sunday's championship game where they will face the winner of the matchup between St. Clair County Community College and Lakeland. Mid Michigan improves to 26–4 overall on the season while Ancilla finishes at 18-11.

The Lakers entered the regional tournament looking to bounce back after seeing a 16-game winning streak come to an end last week in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association semifinals with a narrow three-point loss to fifth-ranked Lansing Community College Stars women's basketball. Prior to that defeat, Mid Michigan had gone undefeated in the MCCAA Northern Conference.

Thursday's contest began as a tightly contested affair as the twelfth ranked Mid Michigan women held a slim one-point advantage at the end of the first quarter.  The Lakers created separation in the second, however as a strong defensive effort combined with efficient shooting sparked a 21–10 run in the quarter, allowing them to head into halftime with a comfortable 12-point lead.

That margin would prove more than enough.

The Lakers maintained control throughout the second half, consistently answering any push from the Chargers and keeping the lead in double figures for most of the final two quarters.

Delaney Seaman led the offensive charge for Mid Michigan, scoring 23 points while shooting 50 percent from the floor. The sharpshooter connected on 5 of 12 attempts from three-point range to pace the Lakers' attack.

Gracie Mellinger provided another big scoring boost with 19 points, while Alexus Dunn recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, helping Mid Michigan control the boards.

Now the Lakers will turn their focus to Sunday's championship game, where a regional title and a potential berth in the national tournament will be on the line. With their balanced scoring and strong defensive play, Mid Michigan will look to carry Friday's momentum into one final postseason showdown.
