Men's Basketball Holds off Muskegon, Moves to 5-1 in Conference Play
Men's basketball came into the road contest with the Muskegon Community College Jayhawks winners of their last four consecutive conference games, and a 12-6 overall record.
This was a bout between the second and third place teams in the MCAA Northern Conference. The Jayhawks came in winners of back-to-back games, and 3 of their last 4 games. The Lakers looked to push their win streak in conference play to five in a row.
The Lakers jumped out to a quick 10-2 advantage just four minutes into the game, knocking down a couple of triples. The Jayhawks cut the lead down as low as 3 in the first half, but the Lakers opened it back up, hitting halftime with a 46-36 advantage.
Both teams played an even beginning to the second half, and eventually the Jayhawks went on a run, tying the game at 74-74 with just over 7 minutes to play. After trading buckets down the stretch, Nick Ellis knocked down a pair of free throws with 1:23 to play, giving the Lakers a 89-87 lead. Delon McCloud scored six in a row for the Lakers to close out the game, resulting in a 95-89 victory.
De'Antre Griffin led all scorers with 22 points, marking a season-high for Griffin. Griffin also neared a double-double with 9 rebounds and 3 steals. Delon McCloud scored 20 points, shooting 4-9 from three. He also added 4 assists. Nick Ellis scored 18 points on 5-10 shooting, including 2-3 from three. Ellis also grabbed 9 rebounds and blocked 2 shots. James Wright notched a double-double, his second of the season. Wright scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Devin Watts rounded out the double digit scorers, scoring 10 points. Watts also dished out 4 assists.
The win notched the team's 13th win on the season, pushing their record to 5-1 in conference play. The Lakers return to action when they take on the Bay College Norse on the road, on Saturday, February 3rd. The Norse hold the top spot in the MCCAA Northern Conference with a 19-2 record, including their 6-0 conference clip.
