ICYMI: Lakers Clinch MCCAA North Championship, Wright Surpasses 1000 Points
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – In case you missed it, Friday was a big day for the No. 11 Mid Michigan College men's basketball team. On Sophomore Night at Morey Courts against Alpena, the Lakers (24-3, 13-0 MCCAA North) rolled to a 125-80 victory over the Lumberjacks (2-20, 1-12 MCCAA North).
The win gave the Lakers the outright MCCAA North Division Championship. It is the first conference title in school history.
Mid was led by James Wright once again, as the Redford, Mich. native scored 28 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. The sophomore also surpassed 1000 career points in the victory.
De'Antre Griffin added 20 points and eight rebounds, while Amonti Greene had 17 points, four rebounds, and two assists.
Jaden Clark posted 13 points, while Drew Kelsey scored 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Jayden Hardiman chipped in 10 points.
Mid now makes their longest bus trip of conference play, as they travel to Bay College for a 7:30 PM start on Tuesday (Feb. 25) night. The Lakers defeated the Norse 113-97 at Morey back on Feb. 1, however Bay has not lost since then and enters Tuesday on a six-game winning streak.
Most recently Bay defeated Delta 97-75 last Saturday, led by Ryan Sweeney and Nic Williams with 18 points each.
Following Tuesday's regular season finale, the Lakers will shift their focus to postseason play and making a run in the NJCAA DII Basketball Tournament.
